About the Author:
Dr. Cheryl Archer Hughes has been an educator for over 20 years. She has served in the capacity of a teacher, principal, university adjunct professor, educational consultant and leadership coach. She strongly believes that those leading the efforts in education must relentlessly seek to understand the factors that impact students’ ability to compete in a global society and dare to be innovative enough to delve into these complexities and produce strong results. Therefore, she has remained dedicated to helping children develop a broad foundation of knowledge, as well as, deep, conceptual understanding of the world around them.
Research on children's learning in the first six years of life demonstrates the importance of early experiences in mathematics. An engaging and encouraging climate for children's early encounters with mathematics develops their confidence in their ability to understand and use mathematics. These positive experiences help children to develop dispositions such as curiosity, imagination, flexibility, inventiveness, and persistence, which contribute to their future success in and out of school (Clements & Conference Working Group, 2004).
